Holdsworth House Wedding Photography / Katie & Gerard’s Wedding

Snow in April! Here’s a cool (pun intended) wedding at the picturesque Holdsworth House near Halifax, West Yorkshire. Getting over the M62 from York was a bit of a struggle to say the least as it was blizzard conditions overnight. Thankfully I made it over with time to spare, and joined the girls and boys in the morning for their preparations. The house looked fantastic covered in 4 inches of the white stuffA few cheeky ones to calm Gerard’s nerves!With both Katie and Gerard getting ready at Holdsworth House, it was easy to move between the two in the morning to capture both the guys and girls getting readyKatie’s dress was one of the most detailed I’ve ever seen and was a hand made Australian couture piece with vintage styling, it looked so stunning Katie and Gerard live in Australia (Gerard is Australian but met over in the UK whilst Katie was in Sheffield at uni), I actually met with Katie’s mum and dad for the initial wedding booking, it was great to meet with her parents again on the wedding day It was going to be a bit tricky to say the least to get family members outdoors for group photos but there was ample room in the dining areaA quick trip out front and braving the chill for some gorgeous portraits of the happy coupleIt seems lately on almost all of my weddings so far this year, the best light is when the wedding party are sat down for their meal, I caught this great shot of the house in the evening sunlight that came and went very quickly Katie and Gerard’s fab choreographed first dance

My first wedding of the year back in March with Katie and Steve, who were married at the York Hospitium in the Museum Gardens, I had a great day with such lovely people to photograph! The Hospitium is my most popular venue this year with 5 weddings in total to photograph, all are sure to be a blast!

A beautiful early spring afternoon in Harrogate’s picturesque Valley Gardens with such a happy couple, fresh off the plane from Australia for their pre-wedding shoot. Katie is originally from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, but met Gerard working in an Australian bar in Sheffield whilst at uni. They later moved to Gerard’s home country but have chosen to come back to the UK for their wedding at Holdsworth House near Halifax. Lindsey & Jon’s Pre-wedding Engagement Shoot / Bagden Hall Wedding Photography

It’s been a hectic start to the wedding season, so time to try and catch up on the blog posts. Here is a great pre-wedding shoot that I did with Lindsey and Jonathan at Bagden Hall in Denby Dale near Wakefield. It is a great looking building, with beautiful gardens with a lake and a folly which made us spoilt for choice when it came to backdrops for photos. Whilst we were taking photos, we had the surprise of a private helicopter taking off from the lawn, which doesn’t happen on every shoot! Lindsey and Jonathan were married last weekend so stay tuned for some fab wedding photos on the blog soon!

Katie & Steve’s Pre-wedding Shoot / Temple Newsam, Leeds / West Yorkshire Wedding Photography

The first pre-wedding shoot of the year on the blog! I joined Katie and Steve a couple of weeks ago at Temple Newsam, a stately home in Leeds for their portrait shoot. With there being a blizzard the weekend beforehand, I was hoping to be able to shoot some cool photos knee deep in snow, but travelling over from York (where there was still a fair bit of snow left) I was a little disappointed to see that the closer I got to Leeds, the less snow there was left on the ground! Instead, by the end of the day we were all knee deep in mud, but had a great shoot nonetheless! Katie and Steve will be getting married at the Hospitium in York, but living in Leeds they chose to have their pre-wedding shoot around Temple Newsam, as it was a place that they visited a lot and held fond memories for them both. I’m really looking forward to their wedding in March, I’ve never seen someone smile so much as Katie and I’m sure she will be even happier on her wedding day!

SWPP Architecture Exterior Photographer of the Year!

Last month I was extremely shocked and delighted to be awarded the title of the Architecture Exterior Photographer of the Year by the SWPP for an image which I entered at the beginning of last year of The Arts & Sciences Museum in Valencia. I guess I was mostly shocked by the fact that I don’t actually take photos of buildings for a living as you all no doubt know by now! The photo that won was actually taken in 2008 whilst on holiday with my girlfriend, I had first seen the buildings on a calendar and was so amazed by the out of this world design that I booked a long weekend break to the Spanish city the following week! The complex of buildings were designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and consist of a range of buildings on an old dry river bed that used to run through the city. I could have stayed for days just finding new angles to photograph! I’m actually a big fan of architecture, and for many years whilst at school it was my ambition to become an architect and would spend a lot of my free time designing my dream house! As a change from the usual wedding photography blog posts I thought I would mix it up a bit and share with you some of my favourite architecture and travel photos from city breaks across Europe from the past 4 years. In order, the photos are from: Valencia, Prague, Barcelona and Paris.

Happy New Year to you all! We’re now into the second week of 2012, where does time go to?! I thought it would be a nice idea to share with you my favourite moments from weddings in 2011, I’ve loved every minute of it and can’t wait to see what the weddings of 2012 will bring, heres to another great year!

Diane & Bernard’s Wedding Day / Hazlewood Castle Wedding Photography

A beautiful winter wedding at the picturesque Hazlewood Castle between York and Leeds. Diane & Bernard’s wedding would be my last wedding of 2011 and it was a really great ending to a fab season. I think this is one of my favourite bouquet photos I’ve taken, I love how they are tied with the stems showing, it made them so much easier to photograph!It’s not often you get two ceremonies at a wedding, following the civil ceremony inside the Castle, Diane & Bern had a blessing in the castle’s adjoining chapelWalking UP the aisle as an already married couple!With two ceremonies and it being early December, we quickly caught the setting sun for some outdoor photos against the castle facade
Bern’s two brothers on best man speech duties, had me in stitches!
These guys owned the dance floor with their ‘shufflin’! So that’s it for a couple of months, can’t wait to get started again with the 2012 season, it’s going to be a busy one!

Penny & Richard’s Wedding Day, Bedern Hall York // York Wedding Photography

A lovely intimate wedding on the 5th November at Bedern Hall in the centre of York. The 14th century hall was a beautiful setting for Penny and Richard’s wedding, and with a 4pm ceremony in winter it was quite a test of my camera’s low light abilities! Penny and Richard asked that I process the photos mostly in black and white which I think really works well for this wedding and picks up the atmosphere of the day perfectly. I started the day at Penny’s parents house along for the preparations with her daughter and sister who were Penny’s bridesmaids.

Claire & Gareth’s Wedding Day / The Old Lodge Malton Wedding Photography / North Yorkshire Wedding Photography

Another fab wedding! Welcome to the blog of Claire and Gareth’s wedding at The Old Lodge in Malton, North Yorkshire on a very sunny day in October. Great weather, great venue and great people, the day went perfectly! The Old Lodge is a lovely looking building, being originally a gatehouse for a big Georgian mansion (sadly knocked down a long long time ago). From the outside the Lodge looks like a small castle, with crenellations lining the roof and sits in beautiful gardens with stunning trees (something that attracted Claire and Gareth to the venue in the first place). I joined Claire in the morning for her preparations in the bridal suite along with her mum, sister and niece. Mum doing a fab job on make up dutiesI really loved Claire’s dress, it suited her perfectlyClaire chose to go against the traditional bouquet of flowers and instead made her own bouquet of buttons, many of which were given by relatives or loved ones to give a really personal touchThe ceremony and reception were all at the lodge and Gareth arrived late morning with his brother as best man, so was easy for me to capture moments of both the bride and groom
A button button-hole, how ace is this!Another cool feature of the wedding, the tea ready to be served to the guests after the ceremonyThe low sunlight was amazing and made for some really dramatic back-lit group photosWe made great use of the avenue of trees in the Lodge grounds for some portraits The button theme continued in the amazing wedding cake, featuring decorations made by Gareth
The perfect day ended with an amazing firework display which was a surprise to most of the guests! I had a really great time at Claire & Gareth’s wedding, such a lovely couple who were fab to photograph and can highly recommend the hidden gem of a venue that is The Old Lodge in Malton, I look forward to photographing another wedding there soon!
